Catherine
Conlin (guitar, vocals) is the lyric writer for GO SOUTH. Konstantine
Baranov (bass) focuses on tone, texture, dynamics and composition.
While Baranov is a schooled musician as well as audio technology
expert and practitioner, Conlin (aside from having been classically
trained on piano as a child) is more of a feral artist than what
one traditionally categorizes as musician, although she's been on
the music circuit for 11 years and is prolific in her production.
She has played in the bands Bedtime Story, WORD,
and AWE,
the latter two collaborative projects with Baranov. Their CD, AWE
was released in 2009.
Conlin
also provided instant lyrics to several pieces from two different
albums with Moscow producer
XMZ in his Malarija and Anti-Malarija projects on Strange
Decision Records. Conlin's is a quintessential artist and performer
who interprets the moment. At a show in New York, she decided to
forego the microphone and perform sitting atop a ladder with her
guitar and bounced her voice off of the ceiling and corners. At
another show in San Francisco, she performed an acapella piece standing
on a piano bench that silenced a chatter-filled coffee house. She
is a free-writer and a fine art photographer, both which contribute
to her ability to create fully formed lyrics on the spot, piercing
and honest. Subject matters include psychological dilemmas such
as "My mind, has a mind of its own" to touching metaphysical observations
(from Eclipse), "I wish that once things disappear the essence of
them, remain still behind that curtain of blackness."
BARANOV
has traveled the world making music. He has 11 solo CD's to his
credit as well as experience as guitar player for Nikolay
Kopernik, Allance, The Keepers, Timezone, The Earthlings and
Inflato. Baranov is meticulous in nature and has dedicated his musical
career to the exploration of guitar sound and texture and articulation.
He is a writer, a photographer and a visionary. Meticulous and project-oriented,
he works with Conlin to harness the strength of the original spontaneous
piece and re-create it for a consistently engaging stage performance.
